Fall family portraits and Christmas card photos are just around the corner! The number one stressor to having family photos made (for most families) is…..what to wear. It can seem overwhelming and hard to find a starting point when trying to choose outfits for several people. We’ve put together some helpful tips to guide you along the way.
First, start with mom! Moms tend to be hard on themselves and struggle to find outfit choices they feel beautiful and confident in. If this is you, find something that makes you feel great and go from there!
Second, build off that first outfit choice. If your outfit is a solid color, choose 1-2 additional complimentary colors. If your first outfit has multiple colors, pull your colors from it. Do try to keep things simple with no more than 3-5 colors.
Check Pinterest to see some Fall Color Palettes! Fall is an awesome time to use earthy tones and bold, rich colors — browns, maroons, dark teal, navy, orange, hunter green, and mustard! There’s so many possible combinations.
Some easy ways to add interest to your fall family portraits are to add textures and layers! For example, if dad is wearing a solid shirt, mom could add a jean jacket, sweater, or scarf to add some layering. Little brother or sister could be in a textured or patterned sweater. There is a huge variety of materials you can mix in one photo – lace, cotton, tweed, wool, satin, knitted and more. Keep textures and patterns limited to 1 or 2 people in your group (depending on size of family).
And finally, here are some “no no”s. – Avoid being matchy matchy. Do not use neon colors. Avoid graphics or crazy busy patterns. Don’t dress for the wrong season (too warm, too cold). And don’t feel like you have to buy all new outfits– you may be able to pull some from things you already have!
