Even though I am a baby photographer by specialty, I have always shot senior sessions and usually do 3-5 sessions each year. I actually do love doing them and somehow always get stunning subjects to work with! Here’s some of my favorite highlights of Molly’s senior portraits that I shot this summer at UT Gardens in Knoxville.
I shoot a great deal of my sessions at UT Gardens currently and love the variety it provides. During a senior session, we do a lot of walking and stop at many spots depending on scenery and lighting. No matter what season it is, there is usually some color to be found on the grounds which adds interest to the photos. Sessions are shot either at morning or evening so that will also affect which locations on the property work best for lighting.
What’s the best time of year to do senior portraits? Honestly, I have done these sessions year- round with beautiful results. Fall and Spring seem to be the most popular choices, however. Just make sure you schedule in advance and allow enough time to get your photos back in time for your graduation deadlines.
Three outfits seems to be a good fit for a one hour shoot. Usually, one dressier option and two more casual options. We can also do a more condensed, 30 minute session with two outfit options. It adds interest to incorporate something from your hobbies or interest into your session. Feel free to bring your school uniform, sports equipment, musical interest, books, etc.
We are happy to give advice on what might look best and are able to match up scenery with the clothing. Pinterest is a helpful resource for outfit planning and posing. You can also see some of our favorite senior portraits here.
